The New York Public Library

The Challenge
The Research Libraries were migrating from a “command and control” type culture to an “empower and coach” model. With legacy the baggage of 100 year old legacy systems and ways of getting the work done, senior management was fully aware of the magnitude of the project and the time it would take.

The Solution
As an early part of this effort, the Institute for Staff Development developed a series of workshops for first line supervisors around performance management issues. Interpersonal Development was invited to develop a course in giving and receiving feedback, one of the core interpersonal skills supervisors need in a performance management culture. The workshops were offered every quarter, and participant satisfaction was excellent.
